Fascinating fact!
To the east of Greenwich Pier stands the Old Royal Naval College. Designed by Christopher Wren the buildings were originally used as a hospital for seamen. When the hospital closed in the late 1860s the site was taken over by the Navy and became the Royal Naval College, a place of learning for Navy personnel. Women were first admitted in 1939 and over 8000 WRNS (Women’s Royal Navy Service) were trained there during WWII.
